General Carowinds discussion

^There is a reason the planters are larger than the trees they hold.

Tree roots can be up to twice the distance from the trunk that the branches are. Larger planters prevent the roots from upheaving the walkways.

I understand them wanting to open up the area at the front gate, but I don't really understand them taking out the planter there. That was kind of the only thing that gave the area any personality. Now it's just going to be a big open vacant area. I'll withhold judgement till I see the final product, but it's an odd decision. I also never went on super busy days so that area really never seemed "crowded" to me.

On a semi-related note, how much time do you think the Premiers/Cinnabon/Edy's buildings have left? It's clear Cedar Fair is literally transforming every inch of park, and those don't fit in anymore with the big Starbucks building and new front gate.

I would like to see the Edys building stay just because it is the last surviving structure from Plantation Sqaure in the main part of Carowinds Plaza. The other surviving buildings are on both sides of the Rapids entrance. The other buildings you mentioned can be bulldozed for all I care, atleast Starbucks doesn't look like a cheap attempt at Art Deco.

Well pray tell, what do you eat? How was your trip to china and japan?

Roller,
The majority of a planter is underground. THAT is what prevents the roots from growing up to the path. Some planters are as much as 5 feet deep . The diameter must be at least 5 feet for a 3 inch poplar tree. Usually for any tree the minimum diameter is 5 feet. Most planters have a unique angled shape beneath them that prevents the roots from growing up. As well as bedding and mesh (in some cases) to help guide the roots in a specific path. The above path then sits on top of the section of planter that is underground. The planters in main gate are 5 feet diameter above ground, but below ground they are roughly 8 feet.

As for the Edy's building and the art deco buildings, I'd say two years at most.

I have seen tree roots cause a walkway to crack, upheave and fail an amusement park's state required inspection because it became a tripping hazard. Also keep in mind that some places in the park haven't been rebuilt in decades.

Why would Carowind's remove the planters along the main midways in the front of the park?

The park wouldn't do this if they DIDN'T expect big things to come!

Now that we know White Water is being torn down this early on for project 18'. (If that is where the 2018 addition goes) This could mean 2018 is our next big coaster capital.

Just a thought.

They wouldn't just "remove" them for no reason.

If WWF wasn't on potential Carolina Harbor real estate, I would be screaming 2018 coaster. I definitely think a coaster next year is a possibility, but I don't want to raise any hopes, especially my own.

When WWU was last at Carowinds, park officials during our tour said that the Edy's/Cinnabon buildings were on the chopping block to get removed and/or renovated to match the park's new look. At that time, however, they were removed from the front gate plan due to budget and time constraints. That makes me think that the area to the left of the plaza is on the short-term plan for renovation and I would guess it will be done in phases.

I have a strong feeling that the front plaza area will be finished and fleshed out sooner rather than later ;-).

In about 3-4 more years the park will be 'finished' and able to move forward instead of working on trying to get into where it needs to be.

Looking at company trends and the proposed 20 year plan for CGA is very telling.

I haven't visited Japan or China either, my wife brings home all kinds of Asian fruits, candy and meals from work.

I don't think she has brought home Korean. I know we tried Thai, Cantonese, Chinese and Japanese.

Thank you, Google Translate. Once again you make me look smarter than I really am...
