I don't think it's so much a "shift in attitude" as it is the fact that amusement rides, like any mechanical system, have a design life. What we've been seeing in the last decade or so is simply rides hitting the end of their design life, and it just doesn't make economic sense to invest millions of dollars to replace the ride system without making drastic changes to market it as a new ride. (unless you're Disney or Universal, but that's a little different)
