General Carowinds discussion

I don't think they will put footers or any major stuff for the coaster til after coaster stock. I think we will see alot more progress done to the fenced in parking lot area before any footers go in. Agian this is just all my opinion.

Assuming it is a B&M hyper, which I'm 90% sure it is, the two biggest projects will be to finish any ground moving first and then dig up any areas requiring electric, water/sewage and rerouting of anything.

If they build a splashdown, they first will have to install drainage and piping and then dig the pit, and they also have a lot of boulders to move out of the way, too..

Knowing what I know about Diamondback, and given the warmer climate down there, you'll fist see station prep and additional clearing in the next few weeks, then footer digging quite soon after. With our Diamondback, they had to have some footers done prior to opening day because some were right on the midway, and it looks like there will be little to no interference with public areas for this ride.

Whew! :| It is safe to come out again. I expect digging up the asphalt will be one of the last things to happen before the footers go in. That can be done in a week. If there is going to be a splashdown, I expect that to start pronto.

Whoa...what happen here? Heh heh...

Anyway does anyone think splashdowns are gimmicky? I personally don't really have a stance on it.

Gimmicky yes, and adds nothing to the ride but it is a darn cool visual when watching from the sidelines. Firefall is a good example at Dominion. That music, the jets of water and the blast of flames are very exciting to watch. Otherwise it would just be a plain old Top Spin. I even like watching the fire that shoots out of the top of Volcano. I think that is so cool, but again, it adds little to the ride.

I think a splash-down would be a good idea. It wouldn't add anything to the ride, but it would be a great spot to cool off if it is placed close enough to the path. That would be awesome in the summer heat, and the only other place you can get wet when not on a ride would be the look over on white water falls.

Wow, is it just me or has the Dirt Thread lost weight?

Congratulations CarolinaCoasterFreak for dropping back to 21 posts. Sorry for giving ya a hard time.

Here's an idea - if anyone is taking pictures of park progress this weekend, give a heads-up. Otherwise I'll do the usual if I can. I didn't know this but I heard Carowinds also has rides.....

goldsteh wrote:As someone who enjoys reading these pages about Carowinds that last 24 hours have been interesting. I never post, however, I was incline to respond. I was at Carowinds today having lunch across the street. All I can report is many "red" dump trucks were seen coming and going from the construction site. There was also a "yellow" bulldoser moving the dirt around. As someone who lived for 30 plus years next to the original Magic Mountain.....relax. The site is being developed for a "large" coaster. My experiences from SFMM is that we will have announcement before July and that it is most likely a hyper considering the vastness of the size. BTW....couldn't see any footers from a 1/4 mile away. :D

Thank you goldstheh. Subtlety much appreciated.

No asphalt action going on today at the front of the park.

But I did want to pass on the tip that the food court at Plaza Fiesta (across the street) is offering a 10% "roller coaster discount" to Carowinds pass-holders. Load up on their ceviche, go on a few rides and see how well that sits. Those of you with kids might also want to check out their HUGE indoor playground.

Liking the front page changes, Jonathan. By the way, your trip report made me quite hungry.

I was at the park today and the station has been cleared, there is a bit of stuff still left and the sign is still standing as if holding on for dear life.

There is still a lot of activity going on as far as moving dirt and such.

Still waiting for the red track to show up. :)

Check out the Pita Place called Cosmos at Plaza Fiesta. Used my Season Pass for the discount on Wednesday and it was the best Gyro Platter I ever had.
