General Carowinds discussion

maybe.. but i'd shoot for 2011 for KD for something big at least.

Well looks like alecscrews done went and stole my thunder. Except I have more pics than just Skytower ones...

The train is back.
Image

Albeit much shorter.
Image

An interesting juxtaposition, the well landscaped Dora with the large mountain of dirt in the back.
Image

Guys working on the fence.
Image

There is a hole in the Dora fence.. I am curious what it is for.

Side by side, two weeks ago and yesterday:

This panorama is actually not in my flickr so don't go looking for it.
Image

This valley still hasn't been filled in.
Image

Matchsticks are gone.
Image

The hill is a lot smaller than two weeks ago when I went.
Image

Here is the backside of the hill.. two weeks ago and yesterday.

Obligatory Skytower pic.

Top of the hill.

Trailers in the middle of Hurler, surely nothing to do with the Log Flume area right?
Image

Now for some slightly more interesting photos. I walked along the entire perimeter of the fence, taking pictures along the way. I would not suggest you do that as THE FUZZ was slowly following me the entire time. At this rate I'm going to get banned before I can even find out what is coming next year.

The gate has definitely been getting a lot of use.
Image

A bunch of surveying markers here.
Image

If you look on the curb you will see lettering.
Image

This lettering goes all the way down to the South Gate at regular intervals.

For those that haven't put 2 and 2 together yet, these are markers for footers. Some say "L" at the end which is for a left support, and some say "R" for a right support.

So with this I think we can safely say:
1. It will not be Intamin, they typically use a more lattice support structure.
2. Therefore it will not be any kind of Kingda Ka or Top Thrill Dragster thing. This actually has a layout.
3. It will probably not be floorless, I have never seen an out and back floorless of this length.
4. The entire parking lot is going to be used.

One final pic.

Of course all my 2009 Carowinds pictures can be seen here.

100% sure that they will have at least 1 piece of track here by July/August. :D :D

This is getting interesting. :o

Damn Jay, can you set the bar a little higher please?! Great stuff! I have a feeling that last pan will show up in a before and after in a matter of months.

I can confirm what was said about the trailers, although you have to look closely.

Man, b&m's source just might be right about our coaster being a top ten longest. It seems possible because of how far down the parking lot the marks go, and if he's right about that, he may be right about it being a prototype, and that it will open by scarowinds! Though the scarowinds part seems very unlikely to me.

I'm not going to get too excited because until I see a footer poured and/or track begin to arrive, I don't want to get excited to possibly get let down. I mean, we're making a mountain out of a dirt hill.
#28044
^ from the look of these pictures, i dont think we'll be let down :D

and for Wormy and Jay, i was riding hurler the other day and the trailers were there but i think they said something like..."house of terror", so i would guess they would be for scarowinds..... unless they are trying to trick us??

^^It's okay to be excited, just don't start/continue/perpetuate outlandish rumors like some people do.

Silly me I forgot to update my googlemaps picture.

If we can add another thing to the "things that we know" list.. how about nothing except Dora is opening this year. They don't build large rides for an October opening. As far as track arriving.. wait for footers, track will arrive shortly afterwards. Based on Behemoth and Diamondback I would say August.

I think it's probably a safe bet that the trailers inside Hurler's turn have nothing to do with 2009. That would be the most bizarre place to put them. The Scarowinds comment above sounds accurate.

goldsteh wrote:I spent the afternoon at Carowinds with my kids (also 1000's of MS and HS students). I can agree that I heard the same rumor as earlier posted on this site today. The start of the ride is with a launch mechanism. It is supposed to be over 300 feet. They want it bigger than Kingda Ka and Top Thrill Dragster. The beginning of the ride will be just like these two coasters.
***RUMOR: The announcement for the ride will take place before next Friday. Reason for this is that the merchandise people need to start preparing for this "large" attraction. That was discussed on site 2-3 days ago "announcement within 10 days". Let's see what happens.
I also do believe that the old log flume pool will be used for an ending splash down effect after looking around and from up above today.
The truth is it is getting exciting and maybe an announcement next week. Can anyone confirm an announcement with Dani at the park?

This is what I said about Kingda Ka and Top Thrill Dragster......I said the bignning would be a launch type and possibly taller than 300 feet. It sounds as though from the pictures and reports from today we are looking at something big and tall. Great report. I got kicked out of the Dora area earlier today.....LOL>

Hey JamminJ, did you notice if the way the footer marks are laid out is this a pretty straight forward out and back design? Living right next to the park, I think I will try and get out there this week and plot some sort of chart of the footers to get a really good idea of what we might expect.
