Newton and I have just returned from the lab.

After many calculations including much advanced calculus, we have determined that this is most definitely not a launch coaster. Sorry everyone for the bad news (or good depending on how you see it.)

I will stand by this statement. And if I am wrong, I will agree not to ride said launch coaster at Carowinds in 2010 unless I eat a hot dog first (and Newton's Engineer is a vegetarian.)

So put me on the record- THIS IS NOT A LAUNCH COASTER!

Well if I was able to choose, I'd rather not have a launch for this ride. There is something about going s-l-o-w-l-y up that lift hill, 200 feet or more.... looking around at the view.... feeling the anticipation build.... and saying to yourself 'damn, I hope I don't pee in my pants....'

So Newton's Engineer, can you go do some more calculations and figure out what the colors are going to be?

Actually, Newton's Engineer made a very clear point-s/he is saying this will not be a launch coaster, based on looking at the track pieces (and apparently doing some secret calculations on a freaky calculator). You may not AGREE with his/her point, but there definitely IS a point.

Well I think we know one color which is red if I had to mkae a guess I would say silver or yellow butmore likely to be silver. Well see when supports come or when they tell use everything which ever comes first.

He didn't make any point at all. Now, it is unlikely that this ride is going to be launched. Possible, but unlikely.

However, so far no one has given a valid reason for it to be launched or for it not to be.

Well if this coaster is a launch (which i dont want it to be) then hopefully it will be more like Maverick's lift. Which isnt too fast.

I'm not going to go skim through the hundreds of threads pertaining to this coaster, so if this has already been posted I appologize.

So thinking about the reason why the zip code for West Viriginia was on the box, we come to find out that one of the sponsors for Cedar Point, Crystal Rock Brewing Company, is from there. What's more, they have a drink that has a name very similar to the rumored name for this ride -- Whyte Lightning (http://www.whytelightning.com/)

So I am going to guess that clue was a clue towards the name of the ride and nothing to do with NASCAR or anything to do with height/length and so on like so many wanted to make it be.

I would agree we have seen no valid reason for it to be launched, however there certainly are valid points to be made that this will not be. Most notably the fact we haven't seen any construction work to back up the theory of a launch outside of one small transformer box. As stated previously, Hulk's launch has an entire substation with large mainframes that control the individual motors on the launch. If it is some sort of hydraulic launch we would see some construction for a dedicated room below the ride for the hydraulic motor a la Top Thrill Dragster (http://www.hydraulicspneumatics.com/200/Issue/Article/False/9810/Issue). Even with LSMs I would assume we would have seen a large amount of cable work being done in the ground well before the footers went in. Kinda ass-backwards to go back now and lay cable.

I am still trying to figure out where this rumor of a launch came from. It just somehow manifested out of thin air and is being treated as if there is some factual evidence to back it up. Give me one piece of evidence that points to a launch, just one.

Because the coaster is racing themed it must be launched . (That was sarcasm, which is hard to convey online). I think when some people saw pictures of the track with the bumper wheels (or whatever they're called) on them they for some reason thought the were for the lift hill. If thats what triggered the launch thing I hate to disappoint people, but those wheels are used for the brake run and into the station. Look at a photo of Diamondback's brake run/station and you'll see them. Looking at the pictures of the track at Carowinds I do believe those are all for the break run/station, which were the first things installed on Diamondback. Hopefully by the announcement they'll have start vertical construction.

Personally, i'd rather not have a launch. I like going up the lift hill slowly and looking over the park from high up. If you want launch, go to Kennywood next year.

Diamondback gets up the lift hill VERY quickly.

If I'm not mistaken are not all B&M's built over the past few years a little faster on the lift. I know Led Zep...err Time Machine and Griffon are quite a bit faster than anything previous to 2005ish'. I imagine the only reason for this is to increase capacity/ridership.

On that note, as a cost saving technique for parks, most new B&M's also have much steeper lift hills than some of its previous designs.
