ok I know its not for a splashdown because a splashdown for a nascar coaster would bey gay. but what is the big hole for?

While the train is in the shed it does not actually rest on the wheels that roll on the track. This keeps the wheels from getting an indent on them.

That's a good picture to illustrate your point, they rest on little wheels on the train and then also the kicker tires sitting on the train shed.
