General Carowinds discussion

Question: I'm glad to see that the lift is going up (and just for the record I don't watch the webcam everyday) but looking at the cam, why didn't the finish the brakerun before they started the lift? Now they just have the track laying there. Also, why not have two groups working instead only one? Wouldn't it be faster with two? One can be working on the lift and so on while the other group works on the brakerun and so on? Meaning one group works forward while the another one works backwards?

It would cost so much more to have two crews working, yes you would get it done in, say half the time, but I imagine its cheaper to get a crane for the long haul then two cranes for a month. Also why rush they have 4 months still until they need to start doing test runs.

Uhh, we have been for more than a week now.

Actually, they have at least five months (middle of February). I don't know when Carowinds usually opens, but they may be a ble to wait until the end of February.

5 I think would be pushing it to start testing, cobra was used and had to be cycled 200 times in normal operating conditions before it was opened, they started that in feb. I imagine with a totally new ride its a higher number, in addition it may have a few more bugs to work out. The ride supervisors were at the rides mid to end of feb and ride associates (red shirts) started at the beginning of march. To open at the end of march would seem rather tight to only have a month, could be done I do suppose thou.

^ Bugs expected in a new B&M coaster? I doubt it. This isn't Intamin we're talking about.

As far as testing goes, there's no reason to believe that a used ride receives less test laps. The ride was completely reconstructed and new trains were added, ensuring that a full inspection / testing had to take place.

You can expect Intimidator to make somewhere around 200 laps, and probably very few (if any) issues will arise. B&M doesn't even check the track before they drop a coaster around it's track, it's more of a "we're confident" attitude with them.

^^^It honestly doesn't take that long for the testing. It takes about a month at most, even for three trains. If CarW doesn't open until the end of March, then they have five months to start testing, because I don't think they would want to wait until the end of February. It isn't that they couldn't get it done, it is because they don't want to finish at the last minute.

^^B&M does so the 'cart test' around the track to check clearance on some of their coasters. The one I can think of recently is Manta. I remember reading about it and seeing pictures of them doing the test. If I need to provide photos for proof, then will.

In SC,(where the coaster is located) any coaster built within the state lines has to be tested 500 times in a row without anything messing up before the opening. It is a state law if I am right, at least thats what I heard about Hard Rock.

If that is true (which would definitely be per train), that is 500 runs, by 3 trains, at say an average of 4 minutes per run. Thatg is a total of about 100 hours, which could easily be completed in less than a month. A

Also, when you say "without messing up", that would be major mess ups like a faulty sensor, brakes not working properly, etc. (in my opinion). For instance, if one of the air compressors loses pressure, that would just cause the ride to stop (because of blocks), but I don't think that would mean the whole testing process would have to restart. Diamondback broke down with that problem within a couple weeks, but it then operated like normal. So if it happens on a new coaster, that is no different. It is normal. I don't see 'normal' issues as a cause of the testing 'count' having to restart.

I know, that means nothing, but I was trying to expand on what GameCoxFan1 said.

Well at least somebody is posting something. As mentioned, the board is dead. Let the kids who sit around watching the web cam all day have some fun, after awhile they will get tired of announcing every piece of track that is being dragged into the construction arena. I actually find their youthful excitement, (age as well as number of posts) to be very refreshing.

Well I dont sit and stare at the cam everyday but i get a few screenshots each day, just to see progress. I plan on making a time lapse animation when everythings done...

Let's just say this thread is taking a well deserved breather in between the action. I think that many of the brilliant observations made here over the summer came to you from the same people that thought last night's chicken catcher had any talent.

Speaking of which, it does reek of chkn in here...

So to keep things rolling, here's some additional pics of Saturday's construction tour, before they quickly become irrelevant. Will try not to repeat anything Max or Wes posted.
