Well....they are Palmettos; the state tree of South Carolina. I mean, the coaster is in SC after all.

Well...that area is supposed to be reminiscent of a boardwalk at the beach, which would include trees to remind you of such. Those trees thrive in the coastal areas of NC (well, Eastern) and throughout SC, GA and of course FL.

That's IT! That's IT! You WIN! You WIN!

That sign has swayed me...

Your coaster is the better looking one...

I can't wait to go back to Carowinds. Have been since it was a paramount park!

Um y'all do realize there is a key reason why there are palmetto "palm" trees next to Intimidator. It goes back to NASCAR history and even Dale Earnhardt history. Dale was born in North Carolina. The palmetto tree can be found growing naturally from Florida all the way up the South Eastern Coastline into North Carolina. This includes FL, GA, SC, and NC. NASCAR which pretty much started in the Carolinas has had a rich tradition with palm trees. In the old days of the classic Daytona race on the beach palm trees surrounded the race area. Even today at the Daytona Speedway, palm trees can be seen along the sides of the track....at least they used to be. Also NASCAR seems to like palm trees near victory lanes and speedways (look at Las Vegas and other tracks). It makes since to include these "palm" trees in this area for this reason, to immerse the guest into a believable experience.

And to answer someone else's question. South Carolina's state tree is the Palmetto Tree because it was a key part of the American Revolution against the British. The Palmetto tree, as covered above, grows abundantly on the SC coast. The tree was cut into logs and was used to build Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island. The palmetto tree which has a very special spongy property was a critical choice for building material. Besides being very abundant, the trees sponginess allowed soldiers in the fort safety because British ships would bombard the fort with cannons. The trees basically absorbed the impact and would cause these cannon balls to literally stop dead in their track and fall to the ground. During early morning hours before the British would resume firing, American soldiers would "sneak" out of the fort collect all of the cannon balls to, inturn, return British fire with their own fire. This was key because during this time the British had a blockade of all goods coming into and out of Charleston, amongst other cities as well. This was a major key to the breaking of the British attempts to continue and forcefully rule the colonies.

Ethan wrote:^ Wow, the sign looks great, I love the flags.

Another interesting note from those pictures, they've planted palm trees around the queue. :o

EDIT: Here's that picture:

Why is "Carowinds" written on the sign? In case you don't know where you are at?

Probably because there are 2 Intimidators, and there are going to be lots of pictures of people under that sign.
