General Carowinds discussion

Personally I feel they should build a huge parking deck on the outer fringes and develop a means to move guest to the park, a la Disney, and Universal. All that parking space should be reclaimed for park use.

I feel like I've beaten this point to death (transportation planner here), but I really don't think people have an understanding of just how expensive a parking deck is. There's a reason why the only parks that have them are big budget theme parks that have major land constraints (actually come to think of it Universal Studios is all I can think of). Your typical parking deck is around $20,000 per parking space. So, if you want to build enough deck space for 10,000 cars let's say, you are looking at $200 million. Enjoy not having anything else at the park for 10 years. Looks like someone wrote an article about this very subject.

If theoretically they did do that and actually expanded the park to cover the entire parking lot, I'm pretty sure you would be looking at by far the largest amusement park in the entire world. I just don't see the boundaries of the park expanding that much anytime soon if ever. I think there will be some minor growth here and there, but they are more likely to continue replacing old rides and using existing underutilized space.

People seem to assume by default that all/most parks are land constrained when in reality I suspect very few actually see themselves that way. I think most big parks like to utilize their existing layout as much as possible and don't want to add excess burden to their annual operating and maintenance costs by adding rides without ever removing any.

You're right about the cost of a parking deck. I know first hand from working at a college. As far as having space, I'm a sucker for the Busch Garden style parks where different sections are tucked away in a forest. It is so fun discovering different hidden spots. On the flip side, Carowinds can sometimes feel like the state fair when it gets crowded. I guess that is ok if you like that sort thing. But for me, I really have a hard time relaxing and taking in the atmosphere when there are wall to wall people. IMO, Carowinds was a nicer park years ago before they started taking out the green space. The island really made the park feel larger and the sections more secluded.

Wow, now that is the park I remember from my youth, no trees. I must be getting old but I don't remember that little section going all the way out to the interstate. Is it possible they shortened the course at some point, possibly when they sold off some of those outer parcels? According to that photo it looks like they once owned everything from the interstate back. Funny thing, in my youth, I always assumed Carowinds owned that, but was surprised to see it being developed by others later on.

It is possible, but I doubt it the cost of building/rebuilding monorail track has always been high. That is why very few have been built and why Disney doesnt expand theirs. They most likely would have retained "Right of way" or easement rights for monorail supports and track. I vaguely remember the monorail.

I must say, I don't remember that either. The first time I ever rode it was 1991 and I would have bet that little part wasn't there but I have certainly been wrong before.

And that's why they call it Monorail Drive. Or Festival Drive or whatever. Thanks Swampfox, and some York County planner map guy:

You know as much as the good ol' monorail has been discussed on these boards over the years, it should really have its own thread. Hmm..

I want the Monorail back Wormy, can you go to South America, or South Africa, I know it's not in South Carolina, and bring it back? When it was here I foresake it, I promise I will never do that again. Now that I'm older, I know I would ride it more. Maybe White Lighting was the one sent to South Africa?

Capler wrote:Looking at the map above, Carowinds actually owns a lot of property including the new space. It is sort of configured funny with the campground in the back and the other areas skirting the parking lot. All that parking space should be reclaimed for park use. In the short term they could remove the asphalt, and plant trees until they are ready to develop it in the future. As land become more scarce, this is something that will eventually have to be done anyway.

I think this is a great idea. Plus, if you go to the top, you could get a great view of the skyline.

Can you shed some light on your "Monorail, South America" comment? I'd like to update my Monorail page with that info if it is indeed true. It was originally planned to operate in Acapulco, Mexico, but that never happened. This is one of those little things that has bugged me, not knowing what happened to our monorail.

The Mexico link is what I was referring to. :? Sorry about that.

EDIT: Yes, I realize Mexico is in North America.
2nd EDIT: Everything I'm seeing online says it was actually reinstalled at Vidafel Mayan Palace in Acapulco, Mexico. What have you heard about the scrapped plans?
3rd EDIT: Then again, all of those articles are from 1995. Nothing shows it actually being installed. I think I'm finally caught up to where you are with this.

OMG Chris, I think I need to lay off the Friday night juice. I could have swore I saw a flamingo, horses, people rowing a canoe down a river and a pink elf in that old Carowinds video.

In means of transportation around the park, I'd love to see the SkyQuest ride from Chance. The one in the video is small but I'm talking about a skyquest that goes all the way around the park with multiple stops. To me, this seems more enjoyable than a monorail.
