General Carowinds discussion
#66537
I come to Carowinds down I-77 South. I've been going to the park since the early 2000's, and when visiting for the first time each season I was always so excited at how the new attraction would look (if it was visible). The fact that Fury will be the closest ride to me as I approach the park will even further enhance its already titantic scale. It looks hard to believe in a mere photograph, so I really, really can't wait. Kudos to everyone, even if you've only visited the park once; you've contributed to Cedar Fair's descison to add such a coaster- a coaster that is now a reality.

Wormy said I had some good pics and I should share them here. Hopefully I picked the good ones. :D

Today was the media event for finishing up the lift hill. When we got there they were finishing up the first section from early in the morning.

Image

Here's a close up shot of 'Big Bird's' counter weights For reference, each of those weights is 10 tons for a total of 140 tons of counter weight. It took 33 tractor trailers alone to transport this one crane to Carowinds.

Close up of a support.

Image

Looking up from under the first drop. It took three tries for me to get this as I couldn't keep my balance.

Image

The bottom of the first drop.

Image

It is actually only 4-5 feet off the ground.

Image

The fearless crew that is going high in the air to bring us this great coaster.

Image

Here they are back on terra firma. I thanked them for their hard work to build this for us. At least they didn't try to make me go up in the 'basket.'

Image

One view of the first drop.

Image

The last section staged and ready to be lifted complete with tree, flag, and memory to Max.

Image

More people who are working hard to bring us Fury 325. They are helping to stabilize the track as it is lifted.

Image

And it's in the air! High in the air.

It's almost in place.

There were lots of media on hand from most of the networks.

The last piece of the first hill is nearly in place.

Image

These 'small' forklifts look much bigger from ground level.

Image

So now I realize this picture is out of order. Well, here's a shot of the lift hill without the final piece.

Image

A wider shot to show all 3 cranes working together.

Image

You'll be doing around 95 mph at this point...

Image

Under the lift hill. I'm glad nobody dropped a bolt while I was looking up...

A view exiting the station.

Image

A shot of the other end of the station.

The tour comes to an end. Thank you, Carowinds, for the opportunity to document part of the construction process. I'll be putting more information in my travel blog but wanted to share this with all the great fans at Carowinds Connection.

I'll just think of him going down...lol. Hey! He would have laughed...

OMG, I went from a knot in my throat to a roaring laughter. Thanks Jarvis. We all know he would have laughed but that was a pretty special tribute. Who'd of thunk it those many years ago?

Thanks to everyone who attended and got these great pics. Some of us could only watch on our cell phones during lunch.

Fantastic to see Fury finally topped off. Must be a spectacular view driving south down 77. I may just drive up there this weekend to take a look. I am a little less than 90 minutes, and my sister wants to go Christmas shopping at SouthPark Mall in Charlotte. So I just may take a detour down there while I drop her off at the mall.
