General Carowinds discussion
#32962
It's baaaack. In the 6 years (to the day!) since I first did this, Carowinds has added many additions and upgrades, most notably being Intimidator and Fury 325. In addition Carowinds Connection has seen leaps and bounds in users as well as traffic due to those additions. I figured it was finally time to get this back on track since I would assume the majority of our users never saw the original post. I hope to add things on a regular basis as well, but I probably shouldn't advertise that since I never follow up. :|

First I want to say thanks to Ken Rutherford and http://carowindsearlyyears.com/. Without him and his great site I probably would have never gotten this idea. Hopefully this is just is just the first step and we can eventually get all of the park's brochures and maps through the years online.

Maps

1976 (confirmed to be 1976)
I am actually confused on the year of this, perhaps Ken or one of the other 'old-timers' could shed some light. The date that my parents have on this is 8/12/77. This is obviously not the year of the map as there is no White Lightnin'. Thunder Road is there so it's at least 76, but then it says 'Hanna-Barbera Preview' which would lead me to believe that Hanna-Barbera Land was not yet open, even though it opened in 1975. :?: Also since this is the large souvenir style map, I'm not sure if the design is the same on the smaller ones for the year.. if there were smaller ones? :?:

Anyway some of the stitching I did on this is pretty rough, I somehow neglected to scan the middle crease, so there is a line down the middle that doesn't connect. I think most people will get the gist of it though.

This map is very large, and those on older computers might want to close some other programs before you click.

Now for more recent times...

The image on the left is the cover of that year's map, the right is the map itself.

Other Sites

As you can tell our brochure and map collection, it is by no means complete. Other websites often offer content that we can't yet. So instead of blocking these from our users, we will gladly link to them, until at least we get our own versions up. ;)

Theme Park Brochures has become the de facto place on the internet for those searching for Amusement Park brochures and park maps. They have over 600 maps and brochures from parks all around the world and are adding more all the time.

Here is what they have of Carowinds:
1987 Brochure
1990 Brochure
1989 Park Map
1993 Park Map

News Plus Notes is one of the best Amusement Park related blogs on the internet. They update multiple times a day with news, announcements, brochures, maps, trip reports and many other features. Not to mention they have linked here to our various updates and photos many, many times. Sabrina's Brochure Spotlight gets posted every week, and includes her fun commentary on various brochures from all around the country. And this is where I found a brochure from Carowinds 1986.

If you know of an existing map or brochure already online hosted by another website, feel free to post it in this thread. If you have some maps or brochures in your own collection that you would like to share, send me a PM, and we could work something out. I also have Scarowinds Maps and the one Winterfest map that will scan in at a later date.

Jay, I have the same map and that is definitely a 1976 map. I have found several incidents where names on the maps didn't really match up. Example, the Whirling Dervish was named Wing-O-Swing on the 1979 map although there was never a sign in front of the ride that said that. The maps are printed a year or so in advance which could explain some of the uncertainty. Eventually I will get around to scanning some of the older maps I have (1974, '78, '79, '80, '82, '87).

I will also add the missing brochures to my site real soon so we can have a complete list. 1984-1994.

Thanks for your hard work. I for one know how time consuming such ventures take. Together we can have a "complete" history available of the park for all to see.

It also has several coasters simply going the wrong way. It also has a tree with a face. I don't think they go for accuracy when they draw them.

Nicely done. I have collected park maps since 1999, I also have a map of scarowinds every since the very first year... :D Good to know that other people are interested in these things as well. I noticed that 2000 is missing, it has super saturator on the front since that was the new ride. I wish I had started collecting earlier, but before 1999 I really didnt care about collecting them I guess...

Yea thats one of the first things I noticed hahaha. I wish it was still backwards, but thats another topic.. Its also still backwards on the picture under the attractions section on the website and the paramount logo is still in the toolbar in IE beside the website name.. weird.. Theres a lot of stuff that still says paramount in the park as well...
