Can we leave the park at anytime and return and still be part of the event, or do we need to stay in the park the entire time?

^I'd assume you'd be fine to leave and come back during the normal park hours. Check the schedule to make sure you're not going to miss something you wanted to do, but the scheduled events are optional so honestly I can't see any reason why you couldn't leave and come back (just get your arm stamped like usual!)
